⑩ People who want to expand their capacity to promote racial and social justice

Join us in building necessary skills for
leading change in the workplace and the world

Together we share insightful, honest, and respectful conversations about race, leadership, social justice, personal growth, and topical events.

Our expert facilitators help you welcome difficult conversations about “elephant in the room” issues such as power, race, and privilege. We create a SAFE ENVIRONMENT where you can freely share your experiences, reveal your mistakes, and learn from other members.

The result?

You and your organization are empowered with a deeper understanding of race and equipped with the tools you need to advocate for social justice.

9

reasons people don't address
social justice concerns in their workplaces

Leading an organization is hard enough.
Leading an organization toward greater racial and social justice can be daunting.

CONFUSION

I don't know where to start.

2 CHOICE

There are so many programs.  I don't know which to choose.

3 OVERWHELM

It's too overwhelming and confusing. I'm just one person.  Anything I do
will be just a drop in the bucket.

4 KNOWLEDGE

I don’t know enough. I don't have
the proper credentials.

5 RESILIENCE

I don’t have the emotional stamina
to do that kind of work.

6 FEAR

I don’t want to make a mistake
and be laughed at or scorned.
I’m afraid of being ostracized
by people in the other groups

7 TIME

I need to focus on my career
and family. I don’t have time
for this right now.

8 REPUTATION

I'm Black (or Asian or Latinx or LGBT+ or Jewish or Muslim or…). I don't want to seem like I've got a chip on my shoulder, or be labeled a troublemaker.

9 CREDIBILITY

I’m White. I don’t have enough credibility as a White person.

The most common reason why leaders drop the ball on social justice:

“I want to lead in the social justice arena but I don’t know enough and it’s hard trying to learn by myself!”

Meet the catalyst behind this work

I’m Jean Kantambu Latting, DrPH, LMSW-IPR, a leadership consultant with over twenty years of consulting experience in business and nonprofit multicultural organizations. My practical, research-based solutions have helped hundreds of clients in leadership roles build more rewarding, fulfilled lives at work and at home.

I have spent a lifetime learning how to develop leaders to engage in social justice work. I’ve studied it, read about it, written about it, cried about it, solved problems in it, taught classes on it, consulted on it, developed curriculums about it, and practiced it.

It’s what I eat, breathe, sleep.

I’ve packaged all of that to bring this program to you.

...I have cracked the code of what it takes to become an inclusive leader and change maker in multicultural settings and I am ready to bring the process to you.

I have created a practical, research-based framework, grounded in human dynamics, that teaches leaders how to change, communicate, collaborate, include, and lead.

The framework simply works.

People are confused and often in despair. They see things falling apart in their organizations, their lives, and the world as a whole and want to do their part to make it better.

But how?

Leading multicultural organizations is challenging. First and foremost, you are faced with the challenge of meeting goals and serving clients. Then you have organizational constraints – hierarchies and systems and your own management chain that sometimes facilitate the work and other times get in the way. Next you are confronted with the hard task of simply getting different personalities to work productively together and for people to honor their commitments. These challenges are all part of the normal work day.

Now [drum roll please] add people’s different cultures and expectations to the mix. This person interprets someone else’s comments in a manner that the speaker didn’t intend. Someone from one culture expects kindness and appeasement for the good of the whole, while a person from a different background regards those behaviors as weakness. Sorting all of this out to steer people in the same direction for the same purposes can feel overwhelming.

I’ve heard it, seen it, felt it.

The only difference between you and me is that I have dedicated hundreds of hours in research, teaching, and consulting to learn why these stoppers are happening and what can be done about them. I have made painful mistakes and have learned what not to do. I’ve worked with hundreds of people so I know what works.

The good news is...

two different colored gears connected

You really can overcome the challenges of leading multicultural organizations toward greater equity and inclusion.

I have turned our process into an art and science that gets predictable outcomes.

4 Golden Principles of Social Justice Leadership Change

Commitment

If it were easy, everyone would do it. There are ups and downs in this work – expected and unexpected successes and disheartening disappointments.

What gets those in Pathfinders through it all is our commitment to do the work. Our commitment to stay with our personal journey to hone our leadership skills so that we become the type of leader that others wish to follow. Our commitment to growing ourselves so that we may be more effective, unifying agents of change.

courage icon

Courage

We know that to whom much is given, much is required.  If we want a world that works for everyone, we must have courage, backed by practical, feasible solutions.  In Pathfinders, we help you foster the resiliency to move forward, get unstuck, and change your story to discover your true source of sustainable power.

Context

We must understand the past to create a better future. To co-create change, we must understand the forces that led us to this present day where people are so bitterly divided and generating a level playing field is so difficult. What we see is the tip of the iceberg. By exploring underneath, we can uncover root causes and make more informed steps to make a difference.

Community

We come together with affinity and similarity. Common ground and interesting differences keep us connected.  We celebrate our differences and continuously refine our skills, reexamine our beliefs, and work through differences so that we may learn more effective behaviors.

I find it to be a collaborative learning experience. I have quite a bit of engagement with other peers and colleagues. I really love the fact that you get group coaching through the program. It's a great opportunity to build on the learning.

Engaging in the Pathfinders program with my colleagues has been helpful to me and to our organization as a whole, I believe. Through the blog posts we have been able to touch upon skills that we can utilize at work that help (or at least have helped me) cultivate a culture of acceptance, psychological safety, and eventually a stronger sense of belonging.

I very much appreciate having the opportunity to read thought-provoking material. I really appreciate the opportunity to go through written exercises and also to provide comments to the rest of the group of Pathfinders and then participate in small meetings.

We're glad you asked

Our purpose is for you to:

    • Gain increased awareness of how systemic and internal racism and social injustice developed and became a feature of organizations around the world
    • Understand the personal and societal impact of racism
    • Expand your self-empowerment in becoming antiracist
    • Take effective action against racism

    • managers and individual practitioners in the corporate environment who want their organization to become more heavily involved in diversity, equity, and inclusion
    • social workers
    • nonprofit leaders
    • public administration professionals who would love to see how government makes change
    • people who want to expand their capacity to promote racial and social justice
    • diversity, equity, and inclusion professionals
    • community organizers
    • poverty and civil rights attorneys
    • health policy analysts
    • educators who are bringing multiculturalism into the classroom
    • public safety officers who would love to see redirection in public safety
    • you – regardless of your profession

Your interest in reading thus far shows you are ready to embark on this journey with us. We’re excited about the possibilities for cross-pollination that can occur across fields, work or community environments, and life perspectives.

    • Our work is backed by empirical research, decades of consulting experience, and our own trial by fire experiences. We have studied it, lived it, and overcome adversities to incorporate it into our lives and ways of being.
    • We don’t focus on leadership, interpersonal skills, and racial and social justice as separate topics. Our work focuses on the intersection of these three elements.
    • We know that masterful leadership in this arena requires developing and honing over time. Our membership program offers a unit of four modules every 10-week period. A new unit begins every 10 weeks with fresh materials to deepen your learning and experiences. We give you plenty of time to refine your learning and gain mastery.
    • We are committed to your developing mastery to lead in this emotionally fraught and complex arena.
    • We view your progress as going through these stages on each separate topic:
    • Awareness: you are aware of general concerns addressed by the topic and related skills
    • Understanding: you have a general understanding of what skills mastery looks like
    • Acceptance: you accept that mastering the skills will increase your effectiveness
    • Ability to apply: you are able to apply the skills successfully in at least one situation
    • Mastery: you are able to apply the skills consistently and in different contexts
    • We are multi-modal. We make every effort for you to learn however you learn. We use several modalities for your learning:
    • reading (or listening to podcasts)
    • self-tests on what you have learned
    • posting and reading others’ posts about how you are applying what you are learning
    • facilitated group discussion and sharing with others

You will gain sustainable skills for leading change. Many leaders and advocates have only experienced leadership by people whose tactics and approaches they deplore. Our team at Leading Consciously is steeped in the technology of change and will help you learn how to change hearts and minds. What we share with you is sustainable. At the end of a complete unit of the program, you will be better able to

    • Define systemic and internal racism
    • Discuss the implications and results of racism
    • List steps in your own journey toward becoming a better antiracism advocate
    • Identify your own ambivalences and strengths in confronting racism and social injustice
    • Apply knowledge acquired in this program to develop and implement strategies to reduce racism and promote inclusion in your sphere of influence

This program is for people who want to reduce racism and promote social justice wherever they are. It doesn’t matter to us whether you start off with the malware known as racism instilled in you from childhood that you now seek to eliminate, or if you are among the few gifted with an upbringing where racism wasn’t churning away in the background. What matters is your desire to learn and to improve social justice and opportunities in the society in which you live, work, and love.

See our response to question #5. If you want to promote antiracism, foster social justice, and take on a greater leadership role in the environment in which you live, work, and love, this program could benefit you.

Once per module (every two weeks) we will select a blog post for you to read. It will feature at least one skill that we think is critical for members to learn and practice. The selected skills will enhance your ability to engage in social justice work. You will be asked to post your reflections about it online, respond to the reflections of others, and complete a practice exercise within that two-week module.

During that two-week period, you will participate in a guided discussion where you can bring reflections and questions. This forum provides you a chance to ask for and receive support from other members. Periodically, we will spotlight a member who has a complicated issue or has had a particular success.

You will learn by reflecting and doing, while we are with you every step of the way.

Some modules use videos and others use written blog posts as the discussion material. For those who don’t like to read or have trouble reading, we offer a text to audio option.

We know you’re busy. That’s why we designed the program so you would spend only about three hours every two weeks. We allow plenty of soak time in between units so that you may deepen your confidence and skills development over time.

    • It will take about 15-30 minutes to read or watch the videos to learn that module’s skills.
    • Posting and responding to posts in our community forum give you the opportunity to share with other members.
    • Skills practice should be integrated with your everyday activities, so it will be done in real time.
    • Guided group discussions will last an hour and will feature Q&As from you and other members to learn about your experiences.

The net result is a rewarding experience.

Ideally, your manager will want to buy in for a whole work group. That way, people can support one another and foster the type of inclusive work environment they all yearn for.

Your manager will want to know if the investment will yield benefits back to the organization. We suggest asking them to look at our anniversary issue of the blog in which members of Pathfinders describe their experiences.

If they still have questions, ask them to contact us directly.

If your manager is not interested, then certainly find out if you can get sponsorship for your participation from your organization.  They will benefit from your skills development, so the justification for their support is there. If you don’t get that support, then the question is whether you want to invest in yourself.  We hope you do.

If they still have questions, ask them to contact us directly.

Groups of three or more will be eligible for a reduced price. Organizations and teams should ask for a quote.

We have deliberately kept the fees reduced so that individuals can participate. If the fee is prohibitive for your community, please contact us to discuss.

We do have a limited scholarship program. Please contact us to discuss your unique situation. We may be able to offer membership to you in exchange for your volunteering to help us with a myriad of tasks.

Above all, we are looking for you to say that you feel better prepared to lead in multicultural settings.

As researchers, we will periodically assess your progress. We will ask you questions about the progress you made, the accomplishments you celebrate, the transformation you have experienced.

We also want you to tell us how we are doing. Feedback is essential to us. We will ask you to assess various aspects of the program, tell us what we are doing well and what we need to improve.

In Pathfinders, you will learn how to handle the inevitable self-doubt and what to do when people question your commitment or your actions. You will develop skills on how to handle it when one of your team members accuses another of microaggressions, or what to do when a culturally different team member seems to be set apart from the others.

We’ve created a course that makes it satisfying for you to learn how to produce favorable outcomes. We’ve spent years uncovering the science of why people form into tribes and what it takes to bring them together.
